Smith County Horticulture Program:
Serves the consumer and commercial horticulture industry in Smith County. Programs include annual conferences (East Texas Spring Landscape and Garden Conference, East Texas Fruit and Vegetable Conference, East Texas Turfgrass Conference - all 3 occur in February); Junior Master Gardener program and others during the year. Hansen serves as Smith County coordinator for the Master Gardener Program, which has developed many community programs and projects including the Fall Garden Seminar, Fall Bulb Sale, Northeast Texas Garden Guide & Calendar, the IDEA Demonstration Garden, community gardens, and several youth garden projects. Some of his current research projects are evaluating shade-tolerant plants for East Texas, and testing Earth Kind soil management recommendations in sandy soils in conjunction with a National Earth Kind rose trial located at Lindsey Park. He has a regular garden column in the Tyler Morning Telegraph on Thursdays.
