TYPES OF COMPOSTING UNITS

Home composting does not have to be done in a structure, but if a container is desired, the type of unit or method is really a matter of personal preference. There are many types of manufactured bins and units available or you may want to build your own. The following is a brief list of some popular composting units and their characteristics:

Wire mesh holding units are one of the most inexpensive and easiest structures to build, using galvanized chicken wire or hardware cloth. This type of bin can also be purchased. These units provide good ventilation and easy turning of organic materials.

Wooden pallet units are very easy to construct and used pallets are often available for free. They provide good ventilation and ease of turning.

There are many types of enclosed structures. These types of units heat up the material very well, provide ventilation, and keep pets and pests out of the compost.

Barrel type units can be made using 55 gallon drums or a manufactured type can be purchased. These units usually produce the compost faster because the organic material is turned more often.
