SAVE THOSE LEAVES In the fall, Mother Nature beginnings to change how she dresses her trees as you watch her display her colorful side. The chlorophyll factories have provided nutrients for the tree, protection from the sun for man and beast, formed unique shapes of the leaves according to its kind, in addition to forming a special profile for each specie.
Once these great purposes have been accomplished, what are you planning to do with nature's coat of many colors? Maybe you will rake, bag and ship them to the dump or maybe you will make use of them as nature would have done if you were not around. She needs her leaves to decompose and make more nourishment for the coming years. So here is where you can help.
After raking, further pulverize the leaves by running over them with a mulching mower or through a chipper/shredder, if available. The smaller leaf portions can be used as mulch protection for perennials or added to the compost bin along with grass clippings, kitchen wastes, manure or nitrogen fertilizer and enough water to keep it moist. Occasional turning will provide sufficient air to complete the composting process by spring. Such steps will enable you to help nature help you better protect and care for your plants and soil.
