BLUEBERRIES FOR YOUR HEALTH

BLUEBERRIES FOR YOUR HEALTH

You may want to consider making space for blueberries in your garden. In a USDA-funded study, blueberries were found to be top among forty fruits and vegetables assessed for cancer-fighting antioxidants. The study found that a half-cup serving of blueberries contains more antioxidants than four servings of other cleansing fruits and vegetables such as apples and squash.

If this isn't reason enough for adding blueberries to your diet, there are more anti-aging properties being discovered in blueberries. Dr. James Joseph of Tufts University headed a study that involved feeding older rats (equivalent in age to humans of 65 to 70 years) blueberry extract for two months. In their trials, they saw improved balance, coordination and short-term memory.

Blueberries grow best in acidic, sandy, well-drained soils. Organic matter in the soil will help ensure successful blueberry growth. You will need to plant at least two varieties because they require cross-pollination. Recommended varieties for East Texas are 'Tifblue', 'Brightwell', 'Climax', 'Delite'and 'Briteblue.'
