Blackberry Varieties

Introduction    Thornless

Recommended Varieties for the Hill Country

Brazos
Since its release from Texas A&M in 1959, 'Brazos' has been the standard of the Texas blackberry industry.  Plants are vigorous, canes are erect and the fruit is large and  slightly acidic making it ideal for baking, jams and jellies.

Rosborough
Another A&M release, Rosborough became available in 1977 and has a history of strong production in the hill country.  The canes are erect on vigorous plants, and the fruit is slightly larger and sweeter than 'Brazos'.  Maturity is with to one week later than 'Brazos'.

Kiowa
A relatively new release from the University of Arkansas, 'Kiowa' has quickly won grower and consumer acceptance because of its high quality, very large fruit .  'Kiowa' begins ripening its fruit about a week after 'Rosborough' and continues to bear fruit over a four week period.
