Sustainable Agriculture Systems for Profit, Stewardship, Family and Community

"The goal of sustainable agriculture is to increase economic profitability, enhance environmental stewardship and improve the quality of life on farms and in rural areas." Agriculture Secretary, Dan Glickman, 1992

By federal law, promoting sustainable agriculture was mandated for extension services across the country. "The Food, Agriculture, Conservation Trade Act of 1990 authorizes research and education in Sustainable Agriculture under Subtitle B of Title XVI." As a result, SARE, (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension) was initiated. It was done to promote agricultural profitability and environmental stewardship to improve the life of farm families from which society benefits. As a result, the Sustainable Agriculture program in Texas was initiated. As the SA coordinator, I will be writing and editing a newsletter quarterly to keep you informed of training and grant opportunities for both you and producers. The letter is intended to keep you informed of any opportunities that might be available to you to assist your educational efforts.

Grant Announcement: I have just received information that The Southern Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program has a call for a special grant opportunity. The Producer Grant Special Marketing Grants are designed to encourage farmers, ranchers and farmer/rancher organizations in the Southern Region to conduct marketing projects to promote sustainable agriculture.

The time is VERY short for this. Grant proposals MUST be received in the SARE office by 5:00 pm on January 28, 2000. This grant is in addition to the other grants listed in the Fall Newsletter. A copy of the information can be downloaded from the Southern SARE website at http://www.griffin.peachnet.edu/sare or by calling 770-412-4787.
As farm size in Texas decreases and more clientele from small farms are asking what can they grow to receive income from their "farm", encourage clientele to look at the information available on the internet by contacting http://SAN@nal.usda.gov. Or they can go to http://www.sare.org for information from the national website.
Other grants as previously reported are also due on January 28, so please check the website listed or contact the website at http://sustainable.tamu.edu.
