The fleshy part of the apple surrounds 5 seed cavities, each of which contains a single seed surrounded by a papery cavity. Remnants of the stamens and sepals are often visible on the end opposite the stem end pictured here, the blossom end. (See black speck in the cross section at the bottom of the photo above.)
