The peanut is the fruit of a leguminous plant. The peanut flower is pollinated above ground, but the elongation of the peduncle forces the developing pod underground where it matures. Peanuts are often referred to as "ground nuts" even though they are not nuts. The fruit is a legume and the "peanut" is actually a seed.
