The fruit of the snowpea is a legume, dehiscent and dry at maturity. However, snowpeas are eaten when they are very immature because the fleshy pod is quite sweet when young. A common variant on the edible podded theme is the 'Sugar Snap' pea, which is much more fleshy than the common snowpeas.
